Reckless Rocks
2011
Packaging, Branding, Print Design
Reckless Rocks is a small business in Los Angeles, California that was started in December of 2006 by Ms. Marilyn Ballard. While her pieces vary in materials, scale and execution, her line consistently features natural gemstones. Her line appeals to the LA crowd of “effortless chic” socialites, rockstars, and celebrities.

The jewelry is packaged in plain black boxes with a minimal color palette to allow the gemstones themselves to be the most important feature of the design. White or black interiors will highlight her different pieces of jewelry while pearlescent beige paper additions to the boxes exterior feature iconography that was developed to be consistent with the branding and allow a piece of jewelry to be identified within its protective case. The three icons identify the area of the body the jewelry is designed for (ear, neck, or hand) and the colors of stones used in each piece.

A gemstone guide to be included with each of her pieces to informs the customer of the properties of the gems they purchased as well as the other 23 stones she frequently uses to encourage brand loyalty. This guide contains information about the properties of the stone, its geographic origins, and “Why you want it.”

  • Trees for the Future
Trees for the Future is an international non-profit organization that promotes sustainable agro-forestry, or “a land-use system that integrates agriculture, trees, people, and animals in the same space, resulting in improved soil quality, higher yields, and improved standards of living.” TFTF distributes a newsletter to donors and corporate partners quarterly entitled “Bark.” This publication raises awareness of TFTF’s various projects and keeps supporters up to date on recent and upcoming events.

Being an environmentally conscious organization, recycled paper was a natural choice. The newsprint is thin so single-sided printing is the best option. To maximize the printing surface, the newsletter is designed both as a French-fold booklet and as a continuous surface. When the newsletter arrives, the folds allow two panels of the design to double back around the remaining pages as the booklet is a self-mailer. Each article is contained within a spread, while images and other design elements are allowed to spill onto other pages to encourage the recipient to read the entire booklet from front to back. The newsletter can also be displayed as a very long poster (comprised of several sheets of paper joined together).

  • A String Quartet Tribute to NIN
The String Quartet Tribute is a series of string quartet arrangements of pop songs released by Vitamin Records by several different groups of musicians, led by Todd Mark Rubenstein. They focus on one band per record, and perform classical versions of their songs, generally note for note, as well as an original composition for each album. They use a wide array of instruments but focus mainly on violins, violas, and cellos. Over the years, they have put out a large number of albums (232+), honoring mainstream and indie groups alike. They have put a classical spin on many genres of music, including rock, pop, punk, techno, hardcore, country, metal and rap.

This CD is classical music for an industrial rock audience. These listeners were drawn to the product from their existing appreciation of Nine Inch Nails music. They appreciate the same songs transformed into a new, sophisticated, and certainly more cultured format These string renditions respectfully highlight the complex skills and talent of Trent Reznor’s work. Songs were chosen and arranged to intensify the emotional breadth of the music. Industrial music as interpreted by cello, viola, and violin; experimental in spirit, it is the tribute fit for NIN.
